What tools would be best for hand carving a wood chess set?
Q. I've been interested in hand carving my own wood chess set and board but have no wood carving experience. A chess set has 64 pieces and I think that could be very hard on the hands without the right tools for small wood carving, so I'd like to know what kind of tools would be best for that. Also I would be appreciative of any advice on the type of wood to use and/or tips on staining/glossi ng. Thanks in advance for your responses, Yahoo! Answers community.

A. the smaller tools. they make them in all sizes. and hand carving is hard on the hands always. a good sturdy wood like oak or something like that is good for something you want to last.

What are the best foot positions/angle s on a snowboard for carving and linking turns?
Q. This will be my 3rd season boarding. I do not fall anymore, I have good balance, and do the black diamonds with no issue. What I would like is to fine tune my skills in linking my turns and get into carving. I have a burton cruzer. What foot positions would be best to give me more control of the board and to do smooth turns and carving?

A. HI, I am also new to carving but not snowboarding ( been riding since 88 ) I went to hard plate bindings and hard boots ( similar to ski boots ) this year and the difference is night & day. 1) hard boots and hard plate bindings give instantaneous feedback and input into the board & initiating turns, 2) hard boots & plate bindings bring your boot-foot up higher so "boot out" is no problem at all. even up to 85%+ tilt in a hard over carve turn. As for boot angels , go shallower / lowing in degree number than a freestyle set up number, also go with the lowest number in the lead / front foot and less in the back / rear foot., stay away from parallel even numbers front & back, also the hard plate bindings have a Cant &a [cont.]

What is a pair of rossignol 9x racing carving generation skis worth?
Q. I found a pair of Rossignol 9X racing Carving generation skis 170cm, marker bindings, in someones trash, perfectly good, dont know why they threw them out. Any ideas as to what they are worth? Also what is the best brand of ski?
Asked by Oliver C - Sun Jun 1 02:03:44 2008 - Other - Winter Sports - 1 Answers - Comments
A. Could be several reasons they were tossed. I bought a similar pair last December, $100 USD, with Rossignol race bindings, used but not abused. The ski is long and stiff for current trends in the US, also check the bindings for damage and the flex pattern of the ski. Sometimes the damage is concealed except to an expert. One my students rented a pair and when he tried to use them we found they were broken. Flex the ski and shake it, check for sheer twist and base condition. Good luck.

What's the difference between carving and pumping on a longboard?
Q. Both use the exact same technique: lean your toes forward, then lean your heels back, etc. Yet, carving is used to slow down while pumping is used to propel yourself forward. How is this possible and what is the difference between the two?
Asked by koala_march - Sun May 2 09:40:37 2010 - Other - Sports - 1 Answers - Comments
A. Carving is when you weave down the hill for instance going side to side. pumping is when you apply pressure to increase/remain constant speed.

How to make your own pumpkin carving pattern?
Q. Does anyone know any (hopefully simple) way to make your own carving pattern, out of a face picture?
Asked by sammi - Sun Oct 19 15:53:01 2008 - Hobbies & Crafts - 1 Answers - Comments
A. Get the picture to the size you need to fit the pumpkin(it helps to get the picture in black & white- the contrast shows up better). Tape the picture on the gourd, and use a pin or awl to mark the edges of the head and other facial features. Then make a "frame" for the face, making sure the frame actually touches the head in several places. With the picture for reference, use a gouge or other carving tool to shave away the lighter parts of the face(cheek bones, nose, etc), remembering that shaving more flesh will allow more light to shine through. Leave the darker parts of the picture with the skin on, or the most shallow carving. Once you have the face done, then you can carve around the head to open up the frame. This isn't… [cont.]

Also, I know you can buy soapstone and alabaster etc over the internet and pay a ton for shipping, but is there any stone that I can just drive to and buy locally (or dig up myself)??

A. There are rock shops in Metairie and Lafayette that can sell you different kinds of stone to practice on. Probably others closer that I don't know about. They can also tell you what kinds of native stone would work in your area and where to find it. Try serpentine too. You may want to work your way up to marble, it's pretty unforgiving. Most good art supply stores can sell you carving tools. The Red River Sculpture Society includes some sculptors in Louisiana, and they should be able to steer you to some lessons. They have a good web site. Good luck.

What does this mysterious carving on the back of my violin mean?
Q. My grandfather handed down a beautiful old violin to me. He says that he got it in Europe while he was fighting in World War II, and he wanted me to be able to play it now. It makes a beautiful sound, and I love to play it in concert...but I'm mystified by a carving on the back of it. I've not been able to find anyone who can explain it. On the back, just under the neck, is scratched "Y/EO/B." (minus the quotes, of course) Can anyone explain this to me? Thanks so much!

A. I first would like to know what country your grandfather was in at the time of purchase. no doubt it is abbreviations for a saying, or phrase, but more than likely in another language.

What is the best way to attach decorations to a pumpkin that you are not carving?

What are the different wood carving tools?
Q. Can you enumerate the different tools used in Low-Relief Carving with THEi R USES? PLEASE?
Asked by 'kthln. - Wed Dec 23 06:19:03 2009 - Sculpture - 2 Answers - Comments
A. Most V and round gouges, knives and chisels. The first two are used for making slots with either sloping sides or round bottoms which come in different radii. The latter two are used for making straight or curved cuts and removing material for a flat bottom. Perhaps the most important tool is one or more high quality sharpening stones of various hardnesses and finenesses for the best possible edge. Depending on how you buy your stock you will need a saw and you may need a vise or some other mounting method to free both hands to hold the tools.

What's the difference between linked turns and carving in snowboarding?

A. bear with me as it's hard to explain in words without physically showing you so if its incorrect and someone else corrects it, I do apologize but in my experience imagine a skiier if you will...similar concept...linki ng turns with skiis utilizes shifting your weight from your left and right foot to negotiate a wide turning angle making sweeping 'S' in the snow whereas carving on skiis requires sharper angles that can be performed at higher speeds without really slowing you down. Same concept with snowboarding... linking turns is just slaloming back and forth whereas carving you can maintain a generally straight line on each edge. There are different methods for carving...push- pull technique is a popular one, or what i've [cont.]
